Claims Procedure for Loss or Damage to Cargo Loaded on
PCC (Car Carrier / RoRo) Vessels
Claims Procedures for Boats, High and Heavy Equipment, Vehicles including Personally Owned Vehicles,
and General Cargo moving on a Pure Car Carrier Vessel.
With the provision of all required documents and proof, "K" Line America, Inc., on behalf of Kawasaki
Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line), will promptly assist our customers with claims for loss or damage to customer's
goods while in transit or in “K” Line's care and custody. To ensure quick and proper handling of claims
for loss or damage, please use the following checklist of procedures.
Upon determining that a potential claim exists, the shipper, consignee, or cargo owner should notify their
insurer immediately.
In cases when it is evident that a serious shortage and or damage exits the Port Terminal along with the
Carrier's local office should be notified immediately. Notification may also be sent to the Claims Department of
the National Operations Service Center in Richmond , Virginia within 24 hours.

The cargo interests insurers may also wish to have an independent survey performed. Each survey is for the benefit of the ordering party only.
The cargo interest (owner) should file a written preliminary notice of claim with the Carrier within 24 hours after receipt of the car or when the car should have been delivered. The notice should include the vessel, voyage, bill of lading, vehicle identification number (VIN), type of loss, and estimated amount of the loss.
If the claim is not covered by insurance, an official claim should be filed as soon as possible with the carrier once the amount of the loss is determined, but no later than nine months from date of discharge from the vessel.
The following are documents required for supporting a claim:
- A statement of the claim outlining the claimed amount.
- A copy of the original bill of lading.
- Proof of Loss (notating that loss or damage did not previously exist at port of loading, including pictures)
- Copies of the commercial invoice (from supplier or purchase)
- Copies of the packing list or Dock Receipt
- A copy of the origin inspection report or survey if applicable.
- A copy of the destination inspection report or survey if applicable.
- Repair Invoice
- Subrogation Receipt (or Power of Attorney if not the cargo owner)
It is the responsibility of the cargo interest (owner) to take whatever steps necessary to mitigate the loss.
